Bret Michaels Exits Freedom 250 DC Concerts
Poison frontman Bret Michaels has pulled out of the Freedom 250 concerts planned for Washington, D.C., becoming the latest artist to exit the politically charged National Mall event amid fallout over the way the shows were presented to performers.
Variety reported that Michaels cited “threats and safety concerns” while saying the event had “evolved into something much more divisive” than what he believed he was agreeing to when the booking was first offered to his team.
In a statement posted to social media, Michaels said the opportunity was initially framed as a patriotic music celebration meant to honour veterans, active military, first responders, teachers and “hardworking Americans,” but he later felt the situation had changed. He added that he could not ignore threats directed at his fans, band, crew and family, calling them “unfounded and unforgivable,” and said that was a key factor in stepping away.
Michaels’ withdrawal follows a rapid series of departures from the lineup, including Morris Day, Young MC, the Commodores and Martina McBride, as the event’s association with President Donald Trump and related branding became more widely discussed. Alternative Nation previously reported on the initial bookings when Bret Michaels and Vanilla Ice were announced for the USA-themed celebration.
Organisers have continued to promote the larger Great American State Fair programming that the concerts are attached to, but the shrinking roster and safety concerns raised by artists have put the future optics of the D.C. shows under sharper scrutiny.
