In a new interview with Spin Magazine, former Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons opened up about a recent health scare that ultimately required brain surgery and the long road to recovery that followed.
According to the publication, the ordeal began in June 2024 when Irons woke up in extreme pain. Doctors eventually discovered a lesion on his brain, but faced difficulty determining its cause. As physicians prepared to perform a biopsy, Irons’ wife suggested they “do one more MRI.” The new MRI proved to be a breakthrough, revealing rapid growth that pointed to an infection and ruled out a terminal illness.
Irons was rushed into emergency surgery, during which doctors drilled into his skull to remove and irrigate the infection. He then spent several weeks undergoing antibiotic treatment.
Reflecting on the experience, Irons recalled waking up after surgery to hear his wife tell him: “You’re in the hospital. You had brain surgery. But we can still have a long life together.”
The recovery process proved lengthy and challenging. Irons explained that the infection affected the area of his brain responsible for communication, making even basic speech difficult.
“There were words I couldn’t say,” he said. “My wife’s name is Danae, and I had trouble saying it. So I would just call her ‘my love.’”
Walking also became a challenge, with certain movements triggering neurological pain. Complicating matters further, Irons suffered seizures as doctors began reducing his medication, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of epilepsy.
Nearly a year after the incident, Irons said doctors were finally able to find the right combination of medications. However, the experience has permanently changed his relationship with music.
“I used to push through everything,” he said. “Stress, exhaustion, whatever — I’d drink coffee and force myself into the music room. I can’t do that anymore. Now the priority is functioning through life.”
The 63-year-old musician was quick to note, though, that he has not stopped playing drums altogether.
“I am capable of drumming,” he said. “I’ve done a couple of tunes since the surgery that are going to be on another record with Remco and some well-known friends. I’m just not shooting for the big time anymore. I keep it very scaled back.”
