Foo Fighters frontman and iconic drummer of Nirvana Dave Grohl was on the Bon Appétit Foodcast recently to promote his new Backbeat BBQ company. During the show, Grohl shared a story about one of the worst paychecks he ever received and how one piece of financial advice led to a surprising purchase. Alternative Nation transcribed Grohl’s comments.

Grohl: When it really kicked it was when Nirvana became popular in the Fall of 1991 and by the Spring of 1992 it was just so gigantically huge that we were all making a lot of money, which is something we never had. Like in Scream, per diem is seven dollars and fifty cents per day and you’re like, two tacos and two packs of cigarettes, you know. It was kind of like that in Nirvana too until that record really blew up and then it was like, what the fuck! Everybody then was like: “Don’t be an idiot, you have to buy a house, don’t waste this money and buy a house, and don’t be stupid.” So, I should have bought a house in Seattle but because I was twenty-one and didn’t know anything about anything I bought a beach house in Nags Head, North Carolina. [laughs]

Host: How did you pick that?

Grohl: We had gone down there a bunch. When we were young we would go down to Ocean City but if weren’t going there we would go to Nags Head, North Carolina. There’s an area a little bit north there called Corolla, it’s up by this lighthouse up there.

Host: I know it.

Grohl: Spent the entire summer of 1992 there.
