John 5 Denies Motley Crue ‘Fake Playing’ Claims

John 5 has addressed renewed accusations that Mötley Crüe rely on pre-recorded parts during their concerts, insisting the band’s core instrumental performances are live. The guitarist, who joined the group for its recent touring era, said the claims misrepresent what’s happening onstage and overlook the work the band puts into its shows.

In an interview clip shared by Rock Celebrities, John 5 said bassist Nikki Sixx “is playing every note up there,” and argued that some criticism stems from viewers misreading Sixx’s technique and stage movement as not playing.

John 5 added that audible imperfections are part of the proof, saying the band “messes up” at times and that drummer Tommy Lee and he perform their parts live, while vocalist Vince Neil is singing. He also drew a clear distinction between performance and production elements, acknowledging that backing vocals, sirens, and intro audio can be “pumped in,” but maintained that “all the music that we’re playing is being performed by us.”

The comments arrive as major touring acts continue to face scrutiny over click tracks and supplemental audio in large-scale productions. Mötley Crüe have been a frequent target of that debate, and John 5’s latest remarks keep the band’s position consistent with previous denials of miming or relying on prerecorded guitar parts. Earlier this year, the band’s future touring plans were also the subject of speculation as Crüe members weighed what comes next.

For John 5, the line remains straightforward: while some non-instrument elements may be on track to fill out the show, he says the Crüe’s guitars, bass, and drums are being played in real time, and he’s “proud” of the work behind it.
