During a recent interview with the YouTube show, As It Lays, Red Hot Chili Peppers founding member Anthony Kiedis discussed how changing high schools when he was younger played a critical and key role in planting the seeds of what we now know as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and how he met the band’s deceased guitarist Hillel Slovak. Alternative Nation transcribed Kiedis’ comments. A Red Hot Chili Peppers member recently revealed a surprising fact about a drug he’s used.

Host: What’s the most memorable thing to you about high school?

Kiedis: My friends. So I was supposed to go to University High in West Los Angeles and I had been lying about my address the whole time I was at Ralph Waldo Emerson Junior High School. I show up to high school with all of my team, my people, my friends, little pothead squad and they’re like:

“You can’t go here you don’t live where you say you live.”

Kiedis: I’m like, what!

Kiedis: They were like:

“Yeah you’ve been lying to us the whole time, you can’t come.”

Kiedis: So against my will, I was forced to Fairfax High School. Which seems like a calamity but that’s where I met the friends I would actually live my life with, forever – the Fleas, the Hillel Slovaks, the Jack Irons, etc. So it was a cruel twist of fate that actually opened up my entire life to be what it is today.
