Today would have been late Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland’s 49th birthday. To remember Weiland on this day, his close friend and collaborator Rocco Guarino has provided Alternative Nation with an exclusive story and photo about Weiland at the 2005 Grammys.
“Funny story that goes along with [the photo]… Scott and I were hanging out off to the side like we often did in social situations, since we were both half awkward and half hating everyone we were surrounded by. Norah Jones walked past and Scott gave me a look. I knew that we both kind of had a crush on her. I told him how I fall asleep to her first album every night on the bus, and that it’s fitting because the first song on the album is called Sunrise and it’s usually sunrise when I’m trying to fall asleep.
I turned around for one second to talk to someone, and when I turned back to Scott he was talking to Norah. I overheard him telling her how he falls asleep to her album every night, and then her saying how sweet that was and she touched his arm.
I was so mad I didn’t speak to him for like ten minutes. I would’ve kept my silent protest up longer, but there were too many people backstage that we needed to make fun of, and that was our favorite past time.
After all, Steven Tyler was there.”
Below is the photo, featuring Weiland with his Velvet Revolver bandmates Slash, Duff McKagan, Dave Kushner, and Matt Sorum, along with Steven Tyler, Billie Joe Armstrong, Norah Jones, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Bono, and other musicians.
