In a new Kerrang interview, Slash revealed a conversation he had with the late David Bowie about drugs.

“David Bowie, once, when I was going through my serious hallucination phase. I talked to him about it because it was disturbing. Was this when I was seriously drinking? This was more drug-related. And he’d said, ‘No, you’re probably in a bad place right now and you have become vulnerable to a lot of outside interaction with things that people don’t normally see, and you’ve exposed yourself to this.’ And I was like, ‘Woah! That’s heavy…’ But that was a sound piece of advice. Or maybe an eye-opening clarification of the state of mind I was in.”

David Bowie was a mentor to younger artists as they battled addiction, giving advice to Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor as he battled heroin addiction when they toured together in 1995. Bowie even attempted to reach out to late Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland shortly before his December 2015 drug overdose death. Bowie sadly died a month after Weiland in January 2016 from cancer.

Bowie was around Slash and his family from a young age, as he dated the Guns N’ Roses icon’s mother.

The Guns N’ Roses fan podcast Appetite for Distortion recently released a new episode: “After the interview, Smash asked GNR to “redecorate” the Headbangers Ball set, and they trashed it like a bunch of stoned denim and leather zombies,” – Matt Wake, LA Weekly

1987 was a landmark year for Guns N’ Roses and MTV. “Adam Smash” had a relatively unknown GNR on for an interview in the early days of the iconic Headbangers Ball. Here to talk about the interview, the true story of how and why it happened (especially the trashing of the set)is former MTV VJ Asher Benrubi…aka Smash.
