Joe Perry recently spoke with Classic Rock when he gave insight into one of Aerosmith’s most turbulent times. He recalled how he wanted to replace Steven Tyler with a new singer.

Joe Perry wanted to replace Steven Tyler

The turmoil began back in 2008 when Steven publicly vocalized his wish to focus on ‘Brand Tyler’ rather than Aerosmith. Perry had then responded to his bandmate by simply saying they were now looking for a new singer to recruit, and that was how things had heated up between the Toxic Twins at the time.

However, now reflecting on that ‘public spat,’ Joe seems unsure how to feel about it, though it might be safe to say that the guitarist has a bit of a ‘regret,’ as he stated:

“I’m not sure how I feel about that [The public feud]. They say all press is good press, I’m not sure I agree with that. Maybe it felt like we had to [say] something to our fans. F*ck, I couldn’t tell you. We were so spread apart, I don’t know. Maybe we were trying to set the record straight and be a little bit more honest and let people know what was going on. I don’t know.”

It was noted that the pair’s public spat heated up even more in 2011 when Tyler decided to appear on American Idol as a jury, as Perry belittled the singer’s then-latest career move. However, the duo soon made up after that in 2012, reuniting to record Aerosmith’s ‘Music From Another Dimension’ and making it clear that they had put their public feud behind them.

The Toxic Twins also clashed once again in 2016 when the guitarist criticized Tyler’s solo album, the pair seem to have ‘gotten over the troubling times‘ now, as the Boston natives are getting ready to bid farewell with one last tour.
