Bruce Springsteen Jokes Long Island Is Like Jersey
Bruce Springsteen turned a bit of regional rivalry into crowd-pleasing banter during his Tuesday night show at UBS Arena in Elmont, cracking that Long Island and New Jersey aren’t all that different. The comment landed as part of his between-song remarks, drawing laughs and cheers from the arena as he framed both areas as New York City “bedroom communities.”
During the set, Springsteen told the audience that Long Island and New Jersey were “the same thing,” saying they were “just separated at birth,” Newsday reported. He delivered the line while performing “Wrecking Ball,” tying the joke to the song’s New Jersey-rooted lyrics.
Springsteen continued the riff by describing locals as “bridge and tunnel people,” before adding another punchline about how shaking up New Jersey would somehow turn it into Long Island. The onstage quips appeared to be prompted by the “Wrecking Ball” lyric, “I was raised outta steel / Here in the swamps of Jersey,” which set up the moment for a Long Island crowd.
The UBS Arena remarks come amid a run of headline-making moments on the road, including when he was forced to reschedule a Philadelphia concert earlier in the tour cycle.
Springsteen also gave a nod to Billy Joel during the show, urging the audience to make some noise for the “Piano Man” down in Florida. The shout-out underscored the night’s conversational tone, with Springsteen leaning into local references and musical name-checks while keeping the focus on the performance.
