Freddie Mercury came to life again in the Queen biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ last year, but it wasn’t entirely true to life. Queen weren’t on the verge of splitting before Live Aid, and it wasn’t their final show with Freddie Mercury, the band toured in 1986 and Freddie’s last show was a massive performance at Knebworth, and Queen keyboardist Spike Edney has revealed that he has some gross photos from Freddie’s final tour party. A Freddie Mercury bandmate revealed a sad goodbye letter yesterday.
“That was the result of Live Aid. Their popularity was going through the roof and Highlander had been released. We went from playing arena shows, which we had done on the ’84 tour, to stadiums. I think it’s hysterical that they put Wembley Stadium on sale and it sold out so quickly, that they threw Knebworth at the end of the tour just as an afterthought. And that was, of course, Freddie’s last gig and the last proper performance of Queen. And they didn’t film it. They’ve filmed every single thing since then.”
Freddie Mercury’s heartbreaking note to his boyfriend was revealed earlier this week. Spike added, “I’ll tell you what stands out. Everyone was so pleased and loved the helicopter ride in, that as soon as the gig was over, they took the helicopter ride out. I decided to hang on because backstage, the end of tour party was a huge fairground filled with topless models. And I was the only one there! I’ve got pictures. Then I went home. I was single at the time, so it was OK.”
