Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante discussed the secret to late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s guitar playing in a newly unearthed interview with Ultimate-Guitar’s Steven Rosen. Frusciante rejecting a guitar playing offer was detailed earlier this week.

Frusciante said, “I’m more interested in doing things texturally with the guitar and trying to come up with ways of playing that I find interesting. And for me, the rock star guitar soloing approach is a dead end. I don’t see that many people ever taking it anywhere. And to me, the most interesting guitar players that we’ve had over the last twenty years have not been soloists.

They’ve been people like Bernard Sumner from Joy Division and New Order, Johnny Marr from The Smiths, Johnny Greenwood in Radiohead, Kurt Cobain in Nirvana … none of these people were soloists. These people all did interesting things with their sound and they do interesting lead guitar things but it’s not flashy.

To me that guitar playing kind of reached a peak with Jimmy Page and I don’t really think anybody’s ever taken it any further than Jimmy Page. Eddie Van Halen, I thought went to an interesting place with it but again I don’t think it ever went anywhere from there.”

A Red Hot Chili Peppers icon leaked his final Scott Weiland photo a few days ago. Red Hot Chili Peppers fans recently discussed the direction of the band’s next album on Reddit. Marcioalvesjr posted, “I would really love if they would take a direction like ‘Dreams Of a Samurai’, really love this song and it would be interesting seeing them doing slower and piano-ish songs.

But I actually think that is gonna be the same, a hit, some funky/dancing songs, 2 heavy ones and a ballad to end. What do you guys think? And what directions are they gonna take in the next album and after that?”

RHCPTom responded, “I think this next record could be of a similar sound to the Getaway, but with a little more experimentation. Think we could see more disco sounding stuff like Go Robot. Would certainly expect some classic RHCP funky stuff along the way. Would hope this time the drums are mixed better. Wouldn’t even mind Josh doing lead vocals on one of the tracks as well, would be cool. Would love some more rap vocals from Anthony on the record too, I feel he could excel with that signature style of his. Exciting whatever happens!”

Red Hot Showoff chimed in, “I’d like to see a party feel, upbeat, summer record. Beck did an amazing job with Colors last year and those songs just bring out a happy mood and I think the boys could easily do a full album like that. If not that, then gimme some experimenting and let it get weird.”
