Hope Not Hate - Brixton Academy, April 30

Hope Not Hate - Brixton Academy, April 30
There are always artists a-plenty these days ready to jump on the activism bandwagon in support of one worthy cause or another, which makes one wonder at times whether it’s really the call of their social/green/environmental/political et al conscience, or more the grinding of the PR machinery wheels.

Robert Blake - Dave Hughes - Kenny Leckie - Roscoe Vacant @ Trans European Cafe 24/04/08
First things first, I'd never been to the Trans European Cafe in my life. What a nice surprise I got when we wandered in. It bright and airy, with old maps on the walls and old train seats at the tables. Ive traveled a fair bit of Europe, and they've definitely got the look they're going for. There's a decent selection of good beers at not too steep prices, and the staff are lovely. I've been in a couple of times since, I was that impressed. My first visit was to see this gig, one of a very few folk nights that I have been to.

Ban This Filth - Last House on the Left (1972)
Ingmar Bergman died last year. I love his films and anyone with any sense should as well. My favourite's "The Seventh Seal" but my pal Lin's favourite is "The Virgin Spring". I guess that was ruined for me a bit as I knew the ending due to Wes Craven's piss poor attempt at remaking it as "Last House on the Left".

The Thirst - Sail Away

The Thirst - Sail Away
Rinky dinky guitars that snake around Kinks melodies played with a slight ska beat. So far so fucking Libertines. But Sail Away is by The Thirst, yet another bunch of Park Life chancers fuelled by racing pigeons, jellied eels and supping ale from a beat bobby's hat. It's not The Thirst's fault but I can't buy into this winking, cheeky indie splodge.

Portishead - Third

Portishead - Third
Portishead have been MIA for a decade now. They appeared from nowhere with their loops, samples, scratching, hip hop influences, jazz influences and a melancholic view of the world. They introduced a lot of people to their more cinematic take on the sound of trip hop, a tag which they and the other Bristol bands were never happy with, whilst simultaneously becoming the soundtrack to many dinner parties. They were also very shy when it came to the press, preferring to shun the limelight as much as possible. You liked them, your parents liked them, advertising executives loved them, stoners liked them, ravers liked them—just about everyone liked them. They released two great studio albums, inspired a host of now defunct imitators, recorded a live album with a full string and horn section and then seemed to vanish. Beth Gibbons (vocals) released a folksy solo album while Adrian Utley (guitar) and Geoff Barrow (producer/instrumentalist) worked on production projects including an album for The Coral.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis)
If you know anything about this film or have read any reviews/interviews/synopses you will probably know that writer and star of the film, Jason Segel, appears naked. Full frontal naked, showing his penis in all it’s glory. The suggestion that a naked man crying having just had the love of his life (who he has been in a relationship for 5 years) leave him at the moment he stands clothe less in front of her as he suggests hot sex as being absolutely hilarious sets the tone for Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Clever this is not. Witty? Not at all. Vulgar humour is where it is at for most of the 2 hours that this films stretches to. Most, because as with far too many Hollywood films emotion, morals and a sense of doing the right thing appears to be what the big studios wants at the moment.

Flashbacks Of A Fool (Daniel Craig)

Flashbacks Of A Fool (Daniel Craig)
Daniel Craig is now best known as the lastest James Bond, and perhaps this is not exactly the position he wants to be in. OK, so James Bond is fun and frivolous and is a hugely popular franchise. Craig certainly brought a je ne sais quios to the role. Yet actors who take their business seriously rarely want to be known for one role.

The Living Room Sessions CD Launch @ The Liquid Ship (feat. Eve Bulloch)
The Liquid Ship is possibly the tiniest venue I've ever encountered in my life. It's lovely, however; there's something almost homey about it, and due to its size the gig was pretty intimate.

Up until seeing In Bruges all I could really tell you about it was that a midget gets karate chopped in the trailer....and to be honest that was my sole reason for going to see it.

Zombina And The Skeletones - Glasgow Barfly [11 Apr 08]
Zombina And The Skeletones is just the sort of band name to conjure up a cheesy faux-fifties horror movie psychobilly gig and the last time I saw them play at the Glasgow Barfly they shared the stage with the fake blood & gut's of Karloff and the aptly named Groovie Ghoulies. Could Zombina hold their own as headliners on a non-themed bill?
